• Chapped lips, done with, white light paint powder the same used on the face.
• Tained, faded and washed base look (White paint powder)
• Colours used for brusing (pink and red mixed with dark grey/black)
• Similar look for our character Shane during a section in the night scene after being beaten up

 

Costume ideas

Here are some costume ideas for the characters Shane (teenage boy, around the age of 16) and Ruth (the messed up girlfriend). In the photographs below that I have found I chose specifically to match personality and status of the characters through their clothing's. The character Ruth is more of a tomboy/gangster girl, so I looked for more exposing clothing's such as shorts, mini skirt, anything that shows up her figure. whereas with the character Shane is more innocent and isn't into what most guys of his age would be into like gangs and smoking etc. In order to show that I found outfits that made him look more formal and cute.

The aim of a thriller is to create a high level of tension and suspense to the audience.
From my research, I've found that most thriller movies often use urban or sub urban areas. Busy streets are also commonly used.

Codes and conventions of a thriller include:

• Montage editing

Title sequence research - Phrasshanth

1)     'Dawn of the dead' (2004) - Horror film 

 

The ‘Dawn of the Dead’ title sequence starts with a blank black screen. After a few seconds, the words ‘UNIVERSAL PICTURES presents’ appears in red, bold, bloody text on a black background. I believe that the text plays a huge role in establishing the horror genre, thus using a black background to make it stand out. The way the text dribbles away connotes death and danger. A non diagetic sound has been used for the text, which may suggest that the movie is going to involve a death.

After this, we see people praying, following a scene with the president. This suggests that a big event is going to occur. It also suggests that the world is so monstrous and that nobody is going to be safe. The following scene is of a man with blood in his mouth. editing techniques have been used to edit his face, making it look scary and horrifying.  The title of the film is shown in red, bold capital letters. Each scene lasts for a few seconds and cuts to the next one. This builds up tension and makes the audience want to know what's going to happen next.

Towards the end, we see a cell mutation which suggests that its caused by an infection as its blended in with the bloody text dribbling away. The atmosphere has been established through diagtic and non diagetic sounds. Throughout the clips, background music has been used to build up tension. we also hear a lot of screaming, shooting and heartbeats.

 The use of camera movements has also had an impact in establishing this opening scene. Handheld camera shots have been used to build up tension and make the audience feel panicked. This puts the audience in the characters point of view. 

  

Kidulthood title sequence

I found this title squence on youtube that related to our story for the teen drama. It is fully animated and very short. The lighting throughout is dark, which could coonate as evil, mysterious, despair, fear... it doesn't usually have a positive meaning also there is a voice over of the presdient Obama "this is our time". Throught the title squence we are able to tell straight away what the movie is going to be about as we are able to see huddies, guns, smoking, love etc so the audience can tell that it might either be a teen drama or a gangster movie.

All places first appear to be urban with some green spots growing however, considering the fact that we are filming in winter all plants will not be there and the urban setting would be fully exposed. This allows there to be an effective urban environment in which we can select to shoot in and gives us a wide variety of selection in choosing where we want to film.

Picture Continuity task

To help us with our preliminary exercise which was the Continuity task, we done this exercise using pictures instead of moving images. We had to use less than twenty slides, which had to include match on action, a range of different angles and shots, along with over- the- shoulder ones which used the 180 degree rule.

This exercise will help is to understand what it is like to film and edit the actual continuity task as it has given us a rough idea of what it would be like.
